About Simmin
Simmin Joy is a Certified Anusara Yoga Teacher and massage therapist who credits yoga with slowing the spin-cycle of her mind, and awakening a sense of possibility in her life. After exploring variety of yoga practices, she met Anusara founder John Friend in 2000 and found herself finally at home in the practice. Inspired by the eloquent alignment principles and expansive philosophical approach of Anusara, Simmin has dedicated her practice and teaching to this method.
In addition to over 1200 hours of massage and bodywork education, Simmin has completed a year long Anusara Immersion and Teacher Training with senior teachers, Jim & Ruthie Berneart. She continues to travel to study directly with John Friend, and with world-renowned scholars of yoga philosophy, Dr. Douglas Brooks, Dr. Paul Mueller-Ortega, and Dr. Carlos Pomeda. Simmin has spent summers in residence at the Omega Institute (NY) and the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm (CA), as well as three years as a massage therapist at the world-renowned Canyon Ranch Health Resort (AZ). Most recently, Simmin taught to sold out classes in the Bay Area where students appreciated her playful approach and artful knowledge of alignment. Simmin teaches a class that is both deep and lighthearted, simultaneously focused and fun.
Over a decade of experience as a certified massage therapist brings a deep understanding of anatomy and therapeutics to Simmin’s teaching. She has a special interest in Anusara therapeutics and works with individuals in private yoga sessions to begin or expand their practice, or to clear therapeutic challenges and injuries.
Also a visual artist, Simmin holds a BFA from CCAC in Oakland, and graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in sociology-anthropology from Skidmore College, NY. A native Jersey girl, she now lives with her surfer hubby in Oakland, CA.
